Lewis Banham, World War 2 Dispatch Rider

In April 1942 Lewis Banham was called up for service in the Royal Corps of Signals. He started his training at 2 SCT at Prestatyn. Having previous knowledge of Motorcycles he was trained as a dispatch rider,  which was known as Don Ts . Later he was posted to the 44th Infantry Brigade that formed part of the 15th Scottish Infantry Division.

He was given his BSA WDM20 motorcycle and a Smith and Weston 38 revolver in June 1944. The brigade then moved south and on the 12th of June, six days after operation overlord (D Day) Lewis sailed from Canning town on the liberty ship “Empire Duke”.  When landing at Gold Beach he was handed a Sten gun, 48 hours rations pack, grid reference of his mission then was ordered to ride to Arramanches.

Introducing Operation Banham

Staying true of our mission of Bringing Military History Back To Life, Team VLHM are to retrace the steps of Lewis Banham as he bravely delivered mission after mission through Europe. We are going to travel from Gold Beach, through France, Belgium, Holland and finally on to Berlin. We will undertake this journey while riding a WW2 BSA M20 motorbike, raising money along the way.

Our journey is to be filmed in its entirety in a documentary style edit that we are to release afterwards. In order to thank everyone involved, and to help raise vital funds, we are to hold an exclusive ticket-only Black Tie event to officially launch the documentary style edit. Keep an eye on this page for more details.

Follow this epic journey by staying in touch with our social channels. Updates will be posted on our VLHM Facebook Page and Youtube Channel. For the latest updates, this page will be constantly updated with our progress.
